The common goal of meditation is to try and “empty your mind” is something a lot of people struggle with. It is a difficult state to visualise and imagine what it feels like.

The word meditation is derived from two Latin words – meditari – “to think” or “to dwell upon” and medeiros – “to heal”.

There may be some who consider meditation as a religious act – a form of worship or prayer. While there may be certain elements that evoke a religious connotation, a lot of meditation techniques focus on awareness – be that your surroundings or even just your breath. Sitting and listening to the sound of rain as it falls on your conservatory roof or the sound of waves crashing on the beach is a form of meditation for as long as your mind is focused on those activities and is free from any distractions.

There is a long list of benefit that regular meditation can bring – as well as bringing clarity to the mind, it can bring many physical benefits as well such as reduced blood pressure and improvements in breathing.
